[Response to Request for Ondoku] Please Don't Count Character Usage When Making Corrections
Jan. 26, 2026
Hello, this is Ondoku.
At Ondoku, we receive various inquiries and requests from many different customers every day.
Among those inquiries, this time...
- "I slightly modified the text after reading it aloud; I would like the character count for this re-read not to be counted."
...is the question and request we received.
Since there may be others who similarly feel that
"It feels like a waste for slightly modified characters to be counted,"
we are writing this blog post as a response to this request.
Please don't count the characters when making corrections
Text-to-speech software often uses something called a "speech synthesis engine."
What is a speech synthesis engine?
Generally, it is a system that calls up pre-recorded voice data based on input characters and connects them to create speech.
At Ondoku, we have a separate contract for this "speech synthesis engine."
Specifically, for every character you read aloud, Ondoku pays a usage fee to the speech synthesis engine.
This is something that Ondoku cannot control, and fees are definitely incurred.
Regarding cases where corrections are made,
Ondoku has a unique system where, if it is something you have "read before (settings/text)," the audio can be retrieved from your past reading history.
Therefore, character counts are not counted for "anything you have read before (settings/text)."
However,
- if even a single character of the text changes,
- if setting values such as speed or pitch change by even 1,
- or if the voice of the narration is changed,
it will be determined as "text that has never been read before" and will be processed.
Of course, since it is "text that has never been read before," a usage fee for the speech synthesis engine will be incurred.
Unfortunately, speech synthesis engines are not as flexible as humans.
We recommend that clever humans adapt and make good use of these inflexible machines.
When precise narration is required, such as when creating narrations for YouTube, Ondoku recommends reading as few characters at a time as possible.

Experiences and requests are very welcome!
As a service creator, I am very grateful to receive such requests and inquiries.
This is because when creating a service, it is very difficult to research "what kind of needs exist" and "what people want."
Under such circumstances, receiving inquiries like this allows us to know "how you want Ondoku to be," making these very meaningful emails that help us find the direction for Ondoku's development.
Ondoku will continue to evolve every day to become a service that is easy for you to use.
If you have any thoughts, please feel free to contact us.
Fan letters and messages like "it's easy to use" are also very welcome.
We are very happy to receive them because positive messages are often thought but rarely expressed.
Thank you for your continued support of Ondoku.
